Although it’s been awhile since I stopped buying beans in a can, this boycott didn’t apply to refried beans. I was still paying $0.70- $1 per can and hating every minute of it.

I mean, to serve refried beans as a side to my family of seven takes 3-4 cans. Even on sale with a coupon, that’s as much as $2.80 added onto my per meal cost. That’s not good considering I try to keep the cost of each meal well under $10.

So I decided to try my hand at making refried beans. Many others have gone before me so I was able to pull what I liked from several different recipes, leave out some things and come up with one that works for our family.

Here’s what I came up with:

• Pick your beans and rinse thoroughly.
• Place in the crock pot (no more than 1lb for a smaller crock pot and 2lbs for a larger one) and add 6 cups of water per one pound of beans.
• Add  1/2 whole onion, 1 clove garlic, 5 teaspoons salt, 2-3 teaspoons cumin and a 1/4 teaspoon chili powder.
• Cook on high until beans are tender.
• Using a potato masher, mash the beans lightly and then cook on low for 2-3 more hours, stirring frequently to encourage creaminess.
• Mash one more time with potato masher and let cool.

Some recipes call for “fat” which you can add in the form of bacon grease, shortening or oil. I personally do not add any fat to my refried beans but if you choose to do this, keep in mind that bacon fat or shortening will add the most flavor but canola or olive oil will be the healthiest option.

I freeze my refried beans in plastic containers. Although they take up more room, I extremely dislike the mess I make trying to get all the beans out of a ziploc bag.

Two pounds of dry pinto beans ($2) plus the extra ingredients (approx. $0.50) yields the equivalent of about 6 cans of refried beans. Compared to the regular grocery store price ($0.99), this yields a savings of $3.44.

Rosarita Refried Beans were recently on sale at Homeland. With a coupon match up, they cost $0.67 per can. Even at this price, you’d still save $1.52 by making your own.

• Luggage – Between the holiday rush in December and spring break , the travel industry experiences a lull so you can expect to find great discounts on luggage.
