DIY Citrus Bird Feeder from Simple Saving Savvy
Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. The trees are budding, flowers are blooming and the birds are abundant. It’s the perfect time to help the kiddos make this DIY Citrus Bird Feeder!

Not only is this craft inexpensive, it’s also quick and super simple!

In fact, back when we made these, I was able to bring each of my children into the kitchen one at a time and let them make their bird feeder while I was cooking dinner. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Or you could combine it with afternoon snack time and it’s a win win!

How to a DIY Citrus Bird Feeder

First, gather your supplies. You will need the following:

  • Large Orange
  • Bird Seed
  • 3 Pipe Cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Knife
  • Spoon or Citrus Spoon

Start by using the knife to cut around the orange between the inside of the rind and the fruit. Then use the spoon to scoop out the pulp. If you have a citrus spoon, you can simply use the serrated edge to cut and scoop the flesh out.

Now the best part – let your kiddos gobble up the fruit as as a snack!

Be sure to thoroughly scrape the inside of the rind as clean as you can removing all seeds and pulp. You should now have hollowed out orange halves.

Next, insert the end of a pipe cleaner into outer peel about 1/4 inch from the top edge and push all the way through.

Pull the end through until you have an inch on the inside, fold up and twist to secure.

Now insert the other end of the same pipe cleaner directly across from where you inserted the first end. Again, fold up and twist to secure.

Using the second pipe cleaner, repeat the above steps so you form another “handle” perpendicular to the first.

Cut the third pipe cleaner in half. Use one piece to secure the two handles together at the center to form one joint. You’ll want to loop it back and forth and twist it into a tight knot so that it’s secure.

Now you’re ready to add bird seed to the center of the orange and hang your DIY Citrus Bird Feeder from a branch outside. Be sure to hang it in a spot where you can enjoy watching your favorite feathered friends feast to their heart’s content.

And there you have it! A super easy and frugal craft that takes very little time and effort, but that the kids will love!
